DDoS caused outages are unbearable.
Everything good about A2 is true. They are fast. Easy to deal with. Good support. Free, integrated Let’s Encrypt is awesome.
So why the low rating? In the two weeks we’ve been with them we have more outages and downtime than in the past 2+ years with other hosting companies for our and our two dozen client sites. They say the outages are from DDoS attacks and that they have DDoS protection but it hasn’t handled these huge attacks. They need a different approach. I haven’t had this bad reliability with any other hosting service.
The low reliability is harming my and my customers reputations both with real customers and with search engines. It was a lot of work to get all my client’s sites over and tweak them to deal with differences between A2 and other hosts (can’t email through an external SMTP even with authentication, for example). Now it looks like I may need to move them all back with 1 week to go before a long planned vacation. Nervous? You bet. Tight timing and I don’t want to let my clients down. Not sure I have a choice at this point though

Maybe this is your situation. You are unhappy after your hosting company sold to a bigger hosting company. That's wasnt a problem really, but when support starts to lack and lack. Are they actually receiving my support tickets because they havent replied in 7 days? Service goes down time after time and your clients think its YOUR fault. Every time you say "we need to move" but you dont because it seems like it would be a hassle and where can you find hosting that was as good as your current hosting used to be before they were sold?. You sit out the storm, but the storm doesnt stop. Your current hosting provider starts changing what made your hosting so great. They ... change...everything. What's left? Besides unhappy clients that do not care. They just want their website to work. So we research and finally give A2 a shot. But not all at once. We start with 1 basic plan and move 1 website...wow, that was easy...oh and look, they have all these features and capabilities....oh my gosh, this worked! Let's move another website. BANG! Uh oh, I have a question...Wow, support replied within less than a day for that problem. Holy cow! We are migrating away from our current hosting since they have become less than satisfactory for our needs. A2 has been a dream come true. Anyone needing hosting that SIte5 used to be, we have been overjoyed by the services, ease of use, support and the over delivering we have experienced from them..

Support times were fairly short, less than an hour for the first reply at 2am in the morning. I also utilized live chat multiple times, and always had fast connections to tech support through that. Every single person was very kind and very much willing to help, and they went out of their way to answer my questions and let me know what was going on.

A2 is a bit unstable
My experience with A2 is that they are really hit and miss. (WooCommerce site with ~100 products) I wanted a fast host and in the beginning they were fine, but then things started to go wrong. From time to time I got a lot of “can’t connect to DB”-errors and download speeds (in WMT) would go to from 400ms to 4 seconds, for ex. in May 2017.
Also their “speed plugin” just made my site slower.
If speed is your goal, look somewhere else. Where? I have no idea I’m still looking.

I had two very technical issues which I struggled with for hours, before giving up and finally writing to support. One issue was regarding Ion Cube the other was about Refreshing DNS.
I wrote the email and went to bed. When I checked my email in the morning, both of my issues had been solved within hours.
I should have started with that email.

The only thing I knew about A2 before joining them a few months ago was the speed of the servers was reputed to be the best for my type of need, which given the importance of high-speed websites for my customers, I was very tempted. But I was concerned the support wouldn't be as good as my previous supplier, who had a great reputation, so I delayed trying A2 out. That was a mistake. When I did bite the bullet, I discovered very quickly these guys are exceptional, not just with their server speeds and hosting architecture, but their service is absolutely brilliant - and dare I say it, even better than my previous hosting company. Today was no exception, one of their team (Jeff W) dealt with a critical issue for me, which could have been a disaster, but he took the issue in his stride, explained carefully what had happened, how to avoid again, and he had me up and running in no time. I'm so glad I tried A2, I really am, it's definitely improved things for both me managing the system and for my customers and the performance of their sites.
